A lot of major vacation destinations have kayaking available. Almost all coastal areas have kayak rentals as do most major lakes. One of the coolest experiences can be floating down a non-rapid river through the forest. All these paddling excursions are great ways to view the area wildlife and see great views of the river banks, ocean beaches and lake shorelines. You can swim, get a suntan and relax, all at the same time!

There are thousands of places to plan a paddling vacation, but here are just a few that I love personally! A good old Google Search will do the trick if you want to look into other destinations.

Lake Powell, UT
Teton National Park
Pocono Mountains, PA
Islamorada, Florida (But really, anywhere along the coast of FLA is fantastic!)
Ocean City, MD
Ocean City, NJ
Bear Lake, UT
Columbia River Gorge, WA and OR (This whole area is filled with amazing alpine lakes and rivers)
Great Lakes Region – Midwest (MI, MN, WI, IL)
Finger Lakes, NY

Always know your personal limits and be sure to check on the types of water conditions before you paddle. Also check with local parks to see what the regulations are. Don’t forget your lifejacket and sunscreen!
Candace17 Jul 2013 11:39:26 AMFishing Kayaks for Father's Day
Father's Day is almost here. If you’re like me, you are always rushing around trying to figure out what to do for Dad at the last minute. For years I always based my Father’s Day gifts on two things, fish and sports. My dad either gets the latest “Jets” (don’t hold it against him) football team sweatshirt or a nice wooden fish decoration to hang on the wall. Since these were always my dad’s favorite activities, this always seemed like the best route, until he ran out of wall space for all those wooden fish decorations.

I’m sure I’m not the only one at there who has a dad that loves fishing. I mean loves it. You know, the dad who gets up at 4am so he can get out on the water . The dad who has more fishing rods than pairs of pants. Instead of adding to the shiny collections of rods, or in my case, fish that hang on the wall, why not get dad something he can use for fishing that he doesn’t already have? A boat! No, not a motor boat. Those are entirely too expensive! The best way to get out fishing without all the expensive boating equipment and repairs is to get dad into kayak fishing. He’ll be able to paddle into small coves and navigate smaller waterways that wouldn’t be possible by foot or by motorboat. He can sneak into places other fisherman won’t be able to get to! You’re not only giving him a way to fish, you give him a way to adventure, explore, and relax! If you want to accompany dad while he trolls for fish, we even offer a tandem fishing model. So if you were looking for that father and son or father and daughter get away, here it is! Dad gets double the fun, a kayak and a day spent with his most cherished thing in the world, his children!

We offer several fishing kayaks to fit the needs of many different fisherman, and many different families. Our fishing kayaks come equipped with flush rod holders, spinning rod holders, and tons of storage for tackle boxes, extras, and buckets.

Head over to our kayak area to see more information about the perfect Father’s Day Gift!
Candace13 Jun 2013 11:17:33 AMIt’s Time to Dust off the Kayaks, It’s Summertime!
Memorial Day has past and summer’s had its unofficial start! As the weather heats up and the kids finish up the school year, we are all in need of a vacation. These days, taking that one big trip to Orlando or hopping on a cruise to the islands can put a big hurting on the old wallet. Many people are choosing smaller and more frequent vacations. And lets be honest, who doesn’t want more vacations? I know I do. Here at Lifetime, we wonder, why can’t every weekend be a vacation? Oh, but it can!!

Having a few kayaks laying around for the family can make it easy, affordable and fun to stay closer to home this summer. You can head to your local lake one weekend and the next weekend do a river float. The options are endless! You won’t be paying expensive entrance fee’s, spending hundreds of dollars on gas, or paying an arm and a leg for accommodations. All you need are some kayaks, paddles, family and friends. In fact, you can get a some kayaks for the price you would pay for a few tanks of gas on a long drive in an SUV or just one plane ticket. Unlike a week vacation that comes to a sad and often surreal end, you just get to look forward to the next weekend’s adventures! Where will we go, what wildlife will we see, or what friends will want to join us!?

Remember the neighbor that had the pool? Everyone wanted to come play, swim and cool off. Well, kayaks are the new pool! Everyone will want to try your kayaks! It is the new way to beat the heat, get outdoors and enjoy great company. Instead of spending all that money for 1 week of fun, why not pick up some kayaks and have years of fun for the whole family? You won’t regret it! Lifetime Kayaks wants you to make every weekend a vacation!
Candace04 Jun 2013 12:35:48 PMThe perfect Mother's Day gift: Kayak Adventures!
Last year I wanted to come up with something original for a Mother’s Day gift. I didn’t want to go with the traditional flowers, birdhouses, or candy. Showing her how much she means to me and how much I appreciate everything she does is really important. I racked my brain for days trying to come up with something creative, something different and something that could be enjoyed for more than just one day a year. What would surprise her? What could I do that she wouldn’t expect? Then it hit me! A kayak!!

When Mother’s Day arrived she was never more excited! Instantly she began listing off all the places she could go and how jealous all her friends would be. I think the thing she liked the most was that now we could go out kayaking together. Not only did this give her a new activity, but it gave her a fun way to hang out with her daughter.

This is a common story around the Lifetime Offices. Our kayaks have given families (both our employees and the world) a brand new way to enjoy each others company. It is fun, exciting, and can break the routine of movie nights, game nights and dinners. Kayaking is more than just fun, it gets you outside and active. So grab Mom and take her out for a Mother’s Day she won’t soon forget. Take her on a paddle!!

Need to find the perfect kayak for Mom? Check out our wide range of kayaks from solo to tandem. We have all the equipment Mom and the entire family need to get started at an affordable price. You won’t regret it!
Candace10 May 2013 12:44:18 PMOvernight Kayak Adventures
For most people, when they think about kayaking, they think of a day trip to the local lake. Maybe a vacation day spent floating on the ocean, watching the birds and listening to the calm ocean ripples. While these trips are great, with just a bit more effort, you can really turn a kayaking trip into a fun filled outdoor adventure.

What better way to bond with your family or a group of friends then to be outside, away from all the electronic distractions, kayaking and camping in the wilderness. There are several ways to enjoy a camping and kayak trip. Some rivers flow through campgrounds, parks or national forest land allow camping right along the banks of the rivers. This type of trip can be great for a weekend get-a-way. Day one is spent paddling a few miles to your secluded campsite and getting yourself all setup. You get to spend one fantastic night by the fire, listening to the river and enjoying good company. The next day, you pack up, and get going for another paddle. A few miles and your back on dry land! This style trip will require some additional planning and equipment. It is good to have some dry bags and storage so you can bring your tent, sleeping attire and of course food! Paddlers will need kayaks with storage, such as hatches, larger tank wells, or a lot of bungee to tie things down. Also, be sure you find a calm section of river that does not have rapids or hazards. Always check with the Park Service, Forest Service, Army Core of Engineers or whoever manages the river to make sure this style trip is permitted. Local libraries always have great resources for finding overnight rivers, launch points and campgrounds. Look for a guide to kayaking or river running in your destination state. Be sure not to camp on private land.

The second, and easier route for camping and kayaking, is to just find a campsite a long a river, lake or pond where you can paddle during your free time. Many lakes and reservoirs permit camping along the banks. Here you can setup and not have to worry about hauling your camping equipment down the river. This lowers the need for storage, dry bags and creative packing. While maybe not as secluded, you still get to enjoy the wildlife, campfire and fresh air of the great outdoors. And really, nothing beats good campfire food and s’mores!

If you need a kayak for these adventures head on over to our kayak page to see our versatile line up of kayaks and paddleboards. If you are looking to do some overnight trips and want a beefy-storage friendly kayak, head on over and check out our friends at Emotion Kayaks.

We also offer a wide variety of camping friendly products in addition to our kayaks. Get yourself ready for a summer of camping with these great products; Camping Table, Camping Bench, Kids Picnic Table, and our Tent and Utility Trailer.

*Remember, always wear proper safety equipment, training and research the waterway you plan to visit before you go. Check with local authorities on water levels and hazards.
Candace29 Apr 2013 12:38:14 PMKokanee Tandem: You've never seen a kayak like this before!
At Lifetime, Commitment, Innovation, and Quality, is more than just a slogan, it is a way of doing business! We are constantly working to take our kayaks to the next level, above and beyond what is already out there. We take suggestions and advice from you, the people who use our kayaks, and incorporate that into our designs. After a lot of hard work we’ve come up with a kayak that is like nothing you’ve ever seen!

I would like to introduce our brand new tandem kayak, the Kokanee! It is 10'6" in length and can hold a combined weight of 425 lbs! Sure, there are other tandem kayaks out there, but nothing as innovative and paddler friendly as our Kokanee. We racked our brains to come up with new improvements. We wanted to do something that wasn’t out there already. Something that made kayaking that much more convenient and that much more fun!

There are several design factors and features that make this kayak a step above the rest. The Kokanee has a unique fish-form bottom that is extremely stable – and we mean extremely! You won’t have to trade stability for tracking with the Kokanee! It tracks incredibly well due to the stylish and effective tracking channels and front keel line. This keeps you going in a straight line without having to worry about tipping over, falling out, or doing kayak donuts. This kayak has a spectacular design, but the most exciting part about it is found in its features.

Here are a few of our engineers taking our proto-type for a test run. They sat on the edge with all their weight and the Kokanee didn't even think about turning over!

The Kokanee has several features you can’t get anywhere else. This is the first kayak to have a Quick Release Removable Seat System. Our new seat backs can be removed or switched to different seat positions quickly and easily. Want to paddle tandem? Put the two seat backs in the first and third position. If you want to have a relaxing solo paddle, release the seat back and snap it into the center position. You can even completely remove all the seat backs making it more convenient for storage or transportation. In addition to this amazing, on-of-a-kind seat system, there are also two hatches, a storage area with shock cord straps, water bottle holders, paddle ledges, a front toggle handle and a rear molded in grip handle.

The Kokanee has all the features of a standard tandem with so much more. This kayak really is a step above the other tandems. It is convenient, feature filled and affordable. There has never been a better way to get the family and the kids outside for an adventure! The best part is that you get all this for only $399.00, WHOA! Head over to your local Sports Authority to pick up the next big thing in the kayak world, the Kokanee!!
Candace25 Mar 2013 12:59:44 PMWinter Kayak Storage Tips
It’s that time of year again for a lot of us. Time to store that kayak away for the cold cold winter. We are often asked about how to store a kayak while it is not being used, especially during the chilly winter months. So today, I am here to offer up some winter kayak advice!

First piece of advice, kayaks are not for sledding! They go fast but they don’t like the cold, so keep them off of the snow! Ok, now for the real tips. As always, make sure you wash your kayak after use. This is especially important when you will be putting it into storage for several months. Mild dish soap and water works just fine, no need for fancy cleaners. Make sure you remove sand and dirt, even from those little crevices. And, just think about how nice it will be to pull this baby out in the spring for its maiden run when it is so squeaky clean!

If you can, it is best to keep your kayak in a garage, shed, or covered by an awning. If you live somewhere that gets a lot snow and ice, you definitely do not want your kayak sitting outside either in direct sun or where it can completely freeze over. Lifetime Kayaks can handle it - they are extremely durable - but it is always best to keep them out of the elements if at all possible.

One of the most important kayak storage tips is that your kayak will fair much better in hibernation if you keep pressure off the bottom part of the kayak hull. If a kayak sits on a hard surface on its bottom for long periods of time it can begin to warp or dent. To avoid this, store your kayak upside down with the cockpit resting on the ground or on its side. Cockpit rims are made to be extremely strong and rigid and can take the constant pressure like a champion. Once you have your kayak in the correct position make sure you don’t store anything on top of it.

If you think storing kayaks upside down in your garage or shed sounds like a huge space consumer, consider wall racks or hanging mechanisms. There are a ton of these racks out there on the market and it is possible to make your own. Always remember, no matter the rack, to always try to have the pressure points from the straps or bars touching the cockpit or side of the kayak, not the bottom. Those same rules apply for racks that apply for storing the kayak on the ground.

Check back with us soon because we have a Lifetime kayak rack hitting the shelves early this spring. If you can’t wait until spring, visit our friends at Sports Authority or a similar sporting goods or specialty store for other kayak rack options. And, if you need a shed for your kayaks, check out our Lifetime Shed selection in the Lifetime Store Online. Finally, don’t worry - spring will be here soon!
Candace05 Dec 2012 10:20:00 AMFrom Factory to Floor to You
Over the years, we’ve told you about how our blow-molded products are made, and how our metals are powder-coated to protect them, but how does the whole process work, anyway? I certainly didn't know before I started working for Lifetime. But, here at the Freeport Center, all your products begin from scratch.

When I was first hired, I had the chance to tour the entire facility. And it was probably one of the most amazing things I’ve ever seen. No kidding. Did you know that in our blow-molding facility, our High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) plastic starts out as beads that are pumped from the trains to the building silos? The beads are melted and poured into the blow-molding forms. When the formed part comes out, Lifetime employees remove excess plastic and prepare them for assembly.

In metals, our roll-former slowly rolls and forms the steel into the shapes we need for individual products, be it poles for your basketball system, legs for your table, or even the reinforcement for your backyard shed. The steel starts in loose coils, which looks similar to an 8-track tape.

Before a new model even comes to shelves, our Research and Development team tests each product in every condition possible; from UV-testing and transportation damage, to weight and strength tests on all products. In fact, it would take probably a book to explain all the testing and processes our products go through! We do this because it’s important to us that the Lifetime products you own, can live up to their name.

After each part is made, they’re powder-coated, sent to the assembly line, and then packaged. With the use of amazing robotics, boxes are stacked on a pallet and shrink-wrapped to protect them during the shipping process.

What’s amazing about our basketball packaging is we were the first to ever package an entire basketball system in one single box. Pretty impressive, huh? Our engineers designed the best possible solution to get everything to you as simply as possible.

Each pallet is then placed on trucks by one of the many, many forklifts being operated in Lifetime’s warehouses. Want to know something fun? Our Lifetime delivery trucks average about 43,378 miles per year … just driving around the Freeport Center where our factories are located. Eleven hundred miles of that is spent just driving backwards into delivery doors! The key is you should always have a life jacket when heading out for a paddle whether in your kayak or on your paddleboard. More importantly, you should always be wearing your life jacket when you are paddling.

It is easy to brush the PFD (personal flotation device - aka lifejacket) off as a non-essential but it is just as important as your paddle and kayak. You never know what could happen out there and it is always best to be prepared. Even good swimmers should wear their PFD every time they paddle; never underestimate the power of water!

PFDs are ugly and uncomfortable, right? Who would want to wear them? This is a huge misconception. For a few extra dollars, you can get a PFD that is specifically designed for the recreational paddler. These are made to fit comfortably with the recreational kayak design and the paddle strokes of a kayaker and they are generally stylish. You won’t even know you are wearing it!

Be sure to check with your state for the specific laws surrounding the use of life jackets.  And, be sure to have a jacket for all the paddlers who are going out on the water.  If you need a place to get a recreational paddling jacket, visit our friends at Sports Authority or;
Candace12 Oct 2012 11:00:00 AMPink Fly Fishing Kayak - Great Deal for a Great Cause!
October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. In honor of the health campaign, this month you can get a great deal on a sit-inside kayak while also contributing to a great cause! If you love to fly fish, check out the hot pink Emotion Glide™ Sit-Inside Angler Kayak. We are excited to offer $100 discount off the regular price of the Emotion Glide™ Angler Kayak in the Lifetime Store Online. This year was no different. We ended up on the hills of Heber City at Heber Valley Camp. Knowing I worked for Lifetime, I had several requests to bring kayaks for our day at the lake. So, I checked out the trailer with 12 Lifetime Monterrey Kayaks and we spent all day Saturday paddling around. Needless to say, Lifetime kayaks were a hit! I heard nothing but positive compliments about the boats.

Many people were amazed at the stability of the kayaks. A lot of people who had never tried kayaking expected the kayaks to feel like canoes that can tip with any sudden movement. But, they’re not! Kayaks have a much wider, flatter hull than a canoe so they are a lot more stable – especially Lifetime kayaks which are designed with increased stability for beginners. After everyone realized how stable and easy the Lifetime kayaks were to use, it was only a matter of time before they decided to start a relay race around a buoy to see if the boys or girls could paddle the fastest. I’ll let you guess who won.

The other misconception several people had was thinking kayaking is a serious and/or an expensive sport, which it doesn’t have to be. Lifetime kayaks are sturdy and affordable for beginner and moderate kayakers. They are intended only for recreational use, not whitewater kayaking (which is an extreme adventure sport). In fact, one of our leader’s wife who had been very apprehensive about trying the kayaks finally decided to go out with her husband and can I just say… the look on her face once she started paddling away was priceless—pure bliss!

Apparently, our outing gave more than a few people the kayaking bug. The next Sunday at church, four people asked where they could purchase Lifetime kayaks because they had such a fun time! Since then, I’ve had another request to use the kayaks for an end of summer gathering on the lake, this time closer to home. I’m anxious to see what kind of things come from our next adventure. I think I’ll start a game of kayak rugby... that’s always fun on kayaks!

Tonnie 24 Aug 2012 4:01:00 PMLifetime Sponsors First Paddleboarder, and He is Only 10!

It is quite common in the wild world of outdoor sports, for companies to sponsor up-and-coming paddlers. Lifetime has just taken on the sponsorship challenge. As you may have read in my earlier blog about our Lifetime Hooligan Youth Stand-up Paddleboard, we found a Utah local who is sure to make a splash in the paddleboard world.

We would like to introduce you to our super kid, Mac!! He is only 10 years old but is quickly becoming a master of Stand-up Paddleboarding! Mac’s dad, Gary, is a long-time surfer and has bestowed his wisdom and skill upon his son.

Mac has been entering paddleboard contests around Utah, and has been blowing away his competition! He recently placed 1st in the Weber River Paddleboard Race and the Jordenelle Reseviour Paddleboard Race. Congratulations, Mac! His Dad says that everywhere he goes, people tell him that Mac is the next big thing in paddleboards. So lucky for us, this show is smack in our backyard. While we did attend this show last year, we went bigger and better than ever this year!

The show began for the Water Sports industry on Wednesday, August 1 at the Open Air Demo held at Jordanelle Reservoir. Jordanelle Reservoir is a beautiful venue for a demo day, especially since it is in such close proximity to the show and to infamous Park City, Utah. We took all of our current Lifetime Kayak models out so retailers and potential dealers from all over the world could give our boats a spin. We had the Lifetime Wave, Tamarack, Tamarack Angler, Payette, Payette Angler, Monterey, Manata and Sport Fisher. We had an amazing turn out! Our kayaks were in the water constantly and everybody had an absolutely wonderful time!

The indoor portion of the show kicked off Thursday and continued into Sunday evening. The show is the perfect opportunity to show off new designs and new innovations for the upcoming season. Check out the photos of our displays! Sweet, huh? Notice anything different? Look closely at our kayak names on the signs. This year we re-vamped our logos. Starting in 2013, you will see these new kayak name logos on all of the Lifetime Kayaks and Paddleboards! I'll be sure to tell you more about this in a future blog post.

While at the show, Lifetime staff members mingled with the outdoor industry and showed off all of our great kayak designs. We were busy all day, every day, and we received great reactions to all of our kayaks and our new logo design. We also unveiled a new Tandem Kayak!! I don’t want to spoil things now, so you’ll have to stay tuned for more information on the fantastic new tandem!

We are super excited to be taking the kayak industry by storm and we have you, the Lifetime paddlers out there, to thank! If you haven’t done so already, check out our kayaks and paddleboards at !

Candace08 Aug 2012 12:05:00 PMStand-Up-Paddleboards for the whole family with the addition of the Hooligan Youth SUP!
Stand-Up-Paddleboarding (SUP) is one of the hottest new trends in the water sports world. Over the past few years, it’s gone from a small time activity to a huge, world-wide phenomenon. Last season we unveiled our adult paddleboard, the Lifetime Freestyle XL SUP. This season, we wanted to make sure the whole family could enjoy this new and rapidly growing sport. We scaled down our adult paddleboard, added some new features, and made the Lifetime Hooligan SUP - a fantastic youth paddleboard that fits a wide range of younger paddlers.

The Lifetime Hooligan was designed to be extremely stable and easy to use. We wanted to be sure those first-time jitters could melt away once the paddler realized how stable and safe this board really is! This board also incorporates a cutting-edge and exciting design element - a retractable fin! The Hooligan has a removable surf fin that helps the board go faster and go in a straight line. Unlike our adult paddleboard, the Hooligan’s fin can retract if it hits a rock or a sand bar. This helps the paddler stay standing and cuts down on surprising bumps and obstacles you might find submerged along the way. The Hooligan is also extremely comfortable for your feet. We’ve lined the foot recesses with EVA Deck Foam covering. This foam pads your feet so you can stay out there enjoying the water all day without having to worry about sore feet. The board’s lightweight design makes it easier for kids to move the board around on land and in the water!

We were so excited about this new SUP board that we took it to the streets…..well, to the water to be exact! We found a local Utahan to do some testing for us. Meet our friend Mac, he is only 10 years old and is already blowing away the competition in paddleboard races and events - on our Hooligan SUP! He has been surfing since he was able to stand up on the board, and now that his family is here in Utah, he has taken up SUPing! We’ve also made it a family affair. Mac’s Dad, Gary, who is originally a surfer from Hawaii, has been tearing up the competition on his Lifetime Freestyle XL as well!! Stay tuned to the water sports blog for the rest of the summer to see some more great photos and updates on Mac and Gary as they take SUPing by storm.

Note: The Hooligan SUP and Freestyle XL SUP are intended for flat water use. Use in rapids and moving water is not recommended. Mac and Gary are professionals and have years of experience and training. A Lifetime Youth Kayak!
Are you still trying to figure what to get a Tween or a "kid who has everything" on your Christmas list? Trust me, I know how you feel. As a mom of an 8-year-old, I completely understand how tough it is to come up with gift ideas for those ages when they aren't really into characters or toys anymore. But, if you have a child who loves being active in the water, I have a perfect idea for you - a Lifetime Youth Kayak!

My family tested the pink Lifetime Wave Kayak this summer and we absolutely loved it! Between my kids and my nieces, we had ages 4, 8, 9, and 11 using it. And, I even tried it, too! I must say, we were amazed at how quickly all of the kids got the hang of paddling and maneuvering when they had a kayak and paddle their own size. We have sit-inside adult kayaks that they have tried in the past, but sitting down in the kayak and using a long paddle is really awkward for them to paddle and go anywhere. But, each child figured out how to paddle the Lifetime Youth Kayak within about six strokes. Honest. Even my 4-year-old.

The kayak is a great size. It's small enough for kids to handle on their own when paddling and when dragging it in and out of the water. Yet, it's actually big enough for two smaller kids to ride at the same time. There aren't actual seats for two, but my kids loved sitting criss-cross-applesauce on it and paddling around together. Having a companion is always more fun! Don't worry, the Lifetime Youth Kayak is so stable (which is also what makes it perfect for beginners) that it didn't even tip with two of them wiggling around.

We tested the Lifetime Youth Kayak on Lake Erie with waves, on a calm pond, and on a wetland with trees. The older kids really enjoyed paddling around the trees at the wetland like an obstacle course. As a mom, I was hesitant when Papa first suggested this outing, but I couldn't believe how easily the kids maneuvered the Lifetime Youth Kayak in-and-out of the trees without any problem. The kayak is so-well sized for kids that it was like watching them weave around on their bike since they made it look so easy. And, as you can see by the photo, the older kids also enjoyed using the Lifetime Youth Kayak like a paddleboard.

My 11-year-old niece who is 4'11" and 90 pounds (pictured in the top photo) seemed to be the ideal size for the Lifetime Youth Kayak. Smaller children can certainly use it and enjoy it with room to grow, but for a child much bigger than my neice, the Lifetime Youth Kayak is almost too small. (Consider a Lifetime Calypso or Lifetime Daylite kayak for bigger tweens, teens, and adults.) Personally, even though the Lifetime Youth kayak is rated up to 130 pounds, I think 110 pounds is probably a more realistic weight limit to enjoy the kayak. I am 5'6" and barely under the weight limit. I was able to fit in the kayak (with my legs bent about 45 degrees) and paddle the kayak; however, it definitely started to take on water and "sink" if I tried to go fast because of my size.

The only thing that we found not to work so well on the Lifetime Youth Kayak was the "swim-up" platform which is designed to allow kids to easily board the kayak from the back. Personally, boarding from the rear seemed to require a lot more "repositioning" once they were on board and sometimes the kayak would scoot out from under them as they tried to get on. So, my kids found it much easier just to board the kayak from the side by jumping up on their belly, pushing up with their arms, then pulling their legs up under them. (Similar to how kids climb out of a swimming pool.) Even the 4-year-old could get on that way. I did some asking around afterwards and a co-worker at Lifetime said his kids always board from the back using the swim- up platform; however, they have a backrest on their Youth Kayak and the kids use the backrest (which can be purchased separately) as a handle to help pull themselves up so the kayak doesn't scoot out from under them.

Overall, I can't say enough good things about this kayak. It's the perfect size, perfect weight, a great price, maneuvers easily, is super stable, and is even available in three color options. It really is a perfect Christmas present for active kids ages 4-12 who love the water and love outdoor fun.
Jan30 Nov 2011 12:45:00 PMLifetime Acquires Emotion Kayaks, Creates Water Sports Category
Hold onto your paddles kayak fans because we have some news that is really going to make some waves! As you know, last year Lifetime started manufacturing kayaks and paddleboards. This new product line has been a tremendous success for us and an area where we've seen lots of consumer interest and demand.

Today, we are excited to tell you that you can expect to see even more Lifetime kayak models on the market very soon! Why? Because Lifetime has acquired the assets of Pennsylvania-based Emotion Kayaks. Lifetime has agreed to purchase all of Emotion Kayaks’ assets, including its intellectual property, trademark portfolio, manufacturing equipment, inventory and its retailer contracts. What does that mean to you? Now, kayak products previously distributed by Emotion Kayaks will be manufactured at Lifetime’s headquarters and manufacturing facility in Clearfield, Utah.

If you are a kayak enthusiast, you may already be familiar with the Emotion Kayak brand as they offer a variety of kayak equipment and accessories sold at specialty stores such as REI and Cabela's. The decision to acquire Emotion Kayaks will allow us to combine the successful designs and specialty channel distribution of Emotion Kayaks with Lifetime's global manufacturing capabilities to expand the kayak market.

This kayak product addition will complement Lifetime’s Water Sports lineup, which currently includes sit-inside, sit-on-top, tandem and youth kayaks, as well as paddleboards. With the acquisition of Emotion Kayaks, Lifetime will be one of the largest kayak manufacturers in the world.

As we've shared in previous posts, Lifetime recently announced we will be expanding our manufacturing facilities in Utah and adding new blow-molding machines as part of the expansion. So, guess what these new blow-molding machines primarily will be used to make? Yes, kayaks!

With all of our water sports product growth, we have added a new Water Sports category to our product line, separating kayaks and paddleboards from our Sporting Goods category which carries basketball systems and soccer goals. Watch for this new category on soon. This new category addition means we have also added a new Product Marketing Manager to our Lifetime team and blog team! If you look over to the left of this blog, you'll notice our newest blogger, Vince, will be blogging about Sporting Goods and Playground while Jason will continue blogging about kayaks for our new Water Sports Category.

There's a lot of exciting changes taking place at Lifetime and we're glad you're along for the ride!
Jan18 Nov 2011 12:00:00 PMNeed a Dinghy? Use a Lifetime Manta Kayak!
What's a dinghy? Most likely, if you had to ask, you probably don't need one. :) A dinghy is a small boat, often carried by a larger boat. And, as I recently found out, the Lifetime Manta Kayak makes a great dinghy!

Over the past few weeks, I've shared with you my family's experiences with the tandem Lifetime Manta Kayak (aka the Yellow Banana). And, I keep telling you there is one "unknown" feature that turned out to be our favorite. So…here it is. Ready? Wait for it, wait for it…

You can TOW a Lifetime Manta Kayak in the water behind another boat!

Hmm, not as exciting as you had hoped for, huh? Well, read on, then see what you think. We wanted to kayak around this scenic little island in the middle of Lake Erie. The only problem is that getting to the island from my parents' house required going several miles across Lake Erie. We are avid water skiers and are used to towing skiers, tubes, wakeboards, etc. behind our boat. So, we figured why not try towing the Yellow Banana, too? The Lifetime Manta Kayak has a molded handle in the front of the kayak that is intended to be used as a carrying handle. However, since it is molded in, it is durable just like the kayak and can easily double as a place to tie a rope to tow the kayak.

At first we were a little apprehensive about how the kayak would tow in the water. Would it bounce all over and flip upside-down? Would it take on water and sink? NO! We were surprised at how great the Lifetime Manta towed behind a boat, even at faster speeds. It stayed on top of the water and upright the entire time. Can't do that with most kayaks, that's for sure - and definitely not with a sit-inside kayak! However, I would advise you to remove the scupper plugs before towing; both of ours came out during the tow. (If you do loose them, extras are available for purchase in the Lifetime Store online.)

After we arrived at the island, our next hurdle was to get from the boat and to the kayak. We were wearing our swimsuits and were prepared to possibly get wet as we stepped from the back swim platform of our boat and onto the Lifetime Manta Kayak. Whoa! Not even a slight tipping motion. Nice! The Lifetime Manta Kayak truly is ultra stable. Don't believe me? I took a video of my husband trying it again later just to show you. (As you'll see, even when my husband showed off his lack of grace, it still didn't tip!) I've also included a video of us towing the Lifetime Manta Kayak behind the jet boat so you can see how it sits on top of the water.

Towing the Lifetime Manta Kayak behind another boat is a great way to get it from point A to point B if you are headed somewhere that is too far to paddle. Or, if you have a large sailboat or yacht and need to keep a small dinghy on board to easily get to shore when you anchor, you might want to consider a Lifetime Manta Kayak. It's only 10' long, weighs 60lbs, holds three adults, and you can board it from a boat without ever getting in the water.

So, now you know that using the molded carrying handle as a towing device was my family's favorite feature of the Yellow Banana. What's your favorite feature? Leave us a comment below and share.

Jan10 Oct 2011 10:12:00 AMWill It Tip? Testing the Stability of a Lifetime Manta Kayak
In my last blog post, I showed you how a tandem Lifetime Manta Kayak compares in size to other kayaks. Today, I want to show you a little about the stability of this kayak. Last month my family tested the Manta Kayak for several days on Lake Erie. When I say family, I mean everyone…me, my husband, my kids, my nieces, my brother, my uncles, and my mom and dad. As you can see in the photos, we paddled the Manta in pretty much every weight combination and seating combination possible. The Lifetime Manta Kayak has a 500lb weight capacity and we tested it to its limits. We paddled it with one person, two people, three people… and even four people! And, guess what? It didn't tip! The Lifetime Manta Kayak, or Yellow Banana as we now call it, is unbelievably stable. Even when one person would get on or off the kayak with others still sitting on the kayak, it didn't tip. Granted, it rocked a bit when an adult would hop on or off, but it never actually tipped even when we really tried just for the fun of it.

Paddling the tandem Lifetime Manta Kayak with just one person is easy. However, don't expect it to track and maneuver as easily as a single person kayak. Even though there are three seats, there is actually even enough space for two adults and two small children. But keep in mind, even though our son sat in the front, there isn't actually a seat at the very front and the child can't weigh much over 50 pounds or the front of the kayak will start taking on water, especially if there are waves. So, while it's not advertised as a four-person kayak, it is possible for a family of two adults and two little ones to enjoy riding together. I've included a home video of all four of us riding so you can see how stable it is and how it maneuvers with a full load. (I'll warn you and apologize in advance that it's a bit out of focus a few times, but hopefully it will still give you a realistic perspective.) Oh, and just so you know, the Lifetime Manta Kayak only comes with two paddles. The shorter black paddle my son is using (or rather twirling) is from our Lifetime Youth Kayak.

So, what did we think of the Lifetime Manta Kayak overall? Well, it manuevers a bit harder than an individual kayak, especially with the more weight you add. But, the concept of a tandem kayak is a nice change of pace, especially just for leisurely sight-seeing excursions. Paddling together with someone is fun and makes conversation much more enjoyable. It's nice to be able to talk in a normal voice rather than having to shout over to the person in a kayak beside you. It was also great to be able to enjoy the activity as a family. But, it does take some getting used to. You have to learn to paddle in sync to get anywhere. And, if you have a rider in the middle, you have to really watch your paddles. A couple of times when the kids were paddling, the kiddo in the middle got clunked in the head by accident.

Also, even though three people can ride the Yellow Banana, be prepared for boarding to be a bit awkward! Ideally, load the kayak from the back to the front so no one is climbing in between or on top of someone else. Speaking of climbing on and off… one other safety tip I want to mention is to be sure and watch the backrest clips when you get off the kayak. Several times we accidentally slid across the metal clip that attaches the backrest to the kayak... it hurts and if you are wearing shorts, they can actually get hooked. So, please always make sure to look for the clip before sliding off.

One of the best parts of paddling a tandem kayak? You can take a break and let someone else do the work! :) Yep, as you can see in the picture, my mom and I were just along for the ride…and my brother had no idea he was doing all of the work!

I still have one more review of the Manta I'm going to write next week because as I promised last time, I still need to tell you about our favorite "unknown" feature of the Yellow Banana! Stay tuned…

Jan16 Sep 2011 8:00:00 AMSizing Up a Lifetime Manta Kayak
A few weeks ago, I shared with you some things I learned when registering my new Lifetime Manta Kayak, and promised I would share a review with you soon of my experience using the tandem kayak. So, today is the day.

First, a little info about my kayaking background. Not much to tell really. I'll be honest; I've only done it a few times. I've paddled around a lake and played kayak football on the sit-on-top Lifetime Daylite and Calypso kayaks, and I have paddled on a lake and several miles on a river in a Swifty Islander sit-inside kayak.

So, in my mind, I was expecting the tandem Lifetime Manta Kayak to be similar in size to some of the previous individual kayaks I have paddled. But, my first impression of the Lifetime Manta Kayak? "Whoa, this thing is big." Even though I have seen tons of pictures of Lifetime's tandem kayak, I still wasn't prepared for how big this kayak really is. It's 10' long, 3' wide, and 18" high in the back. Yes, I've read those dimensions plenty of times, but it still didn't really dawn on me what that would look like. I wanted to give you a realistic idea of the size of a Lifetime Manta Kayak so I took some pictures of it laying side-by-side my parents' sit-inside Swifty kayaks and our itty-bitty Lifetime Youth Kayak.

In Lifetime's marketing materials, we say the Lifetime Manta Kayak has a "compact length for easy transport and storage". It surely didn't look very compact, but since I'm not an avid kayaker, I hopped online to look at the length of other tandem kayaks. A-ha! Other tandem kayaks on the market are anywhere from 13-14 feet long! That's a big difference. So, what about the width and height of the Lifetime Manta Kayak? Yes, it is definitely bigger than our Swifty Islander. But, that's not an apples to apples comparison. After all, the Swifty Islander holds one person, and the Lifetime Manta holds three adults. (In future posts, I'll actually even show you that we used it with two adults and two kids!) So, naturally, if you want to fit more people, it probably needs to be a bit bigger. And, there's a reason for the bigger 18" height, too. I'm not making this up… because of its unusual looking hull design (which led us to affectionately name it the "Yellow Banana"), the Lifetime Manta is ultra stable. Super stable. Seriously, we couldn't tip it even when we purposely tried to with three adults on it! It didn't tip when we were getting on or off, or even with someone standing up on it! This makes the tandem Lifetime Manta Kayak ideal for paddling with beginners still trying to figure out balance, and for families taking fidgety kids that would easily tip other tandem kayaks.

Wondering about the weight of the Yellow Banana? Well, the Lifetime Manta Kayak weighs 60 pounds. Technically, that's still considered "light". Yes, it is possible for one person to carry it for a few feet to get it from the car to the water. But, I'll fess up right now and say there was no way I could even begin to carry it by myself. Even for my husband or brother using the carrying handle on the side, the shape made it awkward for them to carry it any distance by themselves. We always resorted to using the molded in carrying handles in the front and rear and two of us would carry it together. (To be totally honest, since we have a one block walk to the lake, we usually just loaded it on a wheelbarrow and rolled it down to the lake to make it even easier!)

So, what does all this mean? Well, yes, the Lifetime Manta Kayak is bigger overall and bulkier than a single kayak. (No surprise.) But, if you are wanting a tandem kayak, this is the shortest tandem kayak on the market. And, when it comes to stability, because of its deeper/higher hull, the Lifetime Manta is unmatched. In my next post, I'll share more photos and stories with you of my family really testing the Manta's stability to its limits, as well as a little unknown feature that turned out to be our favorite part of the kayak!
Jan09 Sep 2011 9:00:00 AMThings I Learned When Registering My Lifetime Manta Kayak
Last week, we journeyed to Ohio for our annual summer vacation to visit my parents. While we were there, Lifetime shipped me a Lifetime Manta tandem kayak to use so I could share some personal experiences and reviews with you. But, before we could legally use the Lifetime Manta Kayak in Ohio public waters, we had to register it as a watercraft with the State of Ohio.

Ideally, the process should be quick… although, unfortunately, the day we went the service wasn't exactly speedy or friendly. But, we simply filled out a form with our contact information and kayak information, paid $25 for a 3 year registration (cost may vary with each state), and received our registration number and tag decal. Then, we headed to Walmart to buy the numbers to stick on the side of the kayak. That's it. Done.

But, in case you are new (like me) to registering a watercraft, here are a few helpful tips I learned during the process:

Not all states require a kayak to be registered as a watercraft. To find out if your state does, simply do a Google search for "Registering a Boat in (insert state)" or visit your local watercraft office. (Our office was actually located where you get a driver's license.)

Each state has different requirements regarding what you need to obtain a kayak registration. We used the Manufacturer's Statement of Origin which is shipped with each new Lifetime Kayak. Even if you don't need this Statement of Origin to register your kayak, always maintain this document in a safe place for future reference. (Ohio's website actually has a handy flowchart diagramming exactly what paperwork you need to get the registration.)

Some states may mandate what size and color of numbers you must use on your watercraft - Ohio requires they be at least 3" tall and contrast with your watercraft.

Finally, be sure to wash your Lifetime Kayak with soap and water and dry it thoroughly before adhering the registration numbers. One of our numbers and our registration decal somehow washed off after our first day on the lake. It feels like there was probably a slight manufacturing film on the kayak that didn't allow the numbers to adhere tightly.

Stay tuned because I'll be sharing reviews, photos, and videos of my family's experience with the Lifetime Manta Kayak in upcoming blog posts!
Jan17 Aug 2011 2:00:00 PMOutdoor Retailer's Show
Last week, Lifetime spent more than three days participating in the Outdoor Retailer’s Summer Market Show held at the Salt Palace in Salt Lake City, Utah. From small shops and regional chains, to the largest national and international retailers, Outdoor Retailer attracts thousands of buyers and decision makers that are looking for outdoor specific products, services, brands, fresh idea, and outdoor innovation.

With our recent developments in the water sports industry, Lifetime was well represented at the show and was able to show off some new products and designs. We are excited to continue innovating and moving forward in kayak and paddleboard development.

While attending the show, I couldn’t help thinking about how great it is to be a company headquartered in Utah. Thousands of businesses from all over the world came to this show that was held right in our own backyard. Utah has a great reputation for outdoor adventures, and it is great being part of a local company that makes products that allow you to enjoy all sorts of great outdoor activities.
Jason08 Aug 2011 3:14:04 PMAnnual Sales Meeting Reveals LOTS of New Products on Horizon
It's been almost a week now, but my head is still spinning from all of our excitement last week! We started the week with a fantastic 25th Anniversary Event at our factory. Then, immediately after the event, the Lifetime Sales and Marketing Team, lead product engineers, and some leaders from other departments held their annual sales meeting.

This conference is a chance for a group of us at Lifetime to communicate, review our progress from the past year, and preview what's planned for our products and business in the coming years. We present and discuss new products, new accounts, manufacturing innovations, international growth, marketing, and more.

If I had to sum up this years meeting in one word, it would be: WOW! You won't believe the list of new products we are rolling out soon! While many of the products are still under wraps for a little while longer, I can tell you that some new Lifetime products already hitting or soon to hit store shelves include a Lifetime Paddleboard, a Lifetime Tailgate Table, a Lifetime Adirondack Chair, and a Sit-Inside Kayak!

During our two-day meeting, we also participated in a few team-building activities. One of the activities this year was some water-fun in our own kayaks, new paddleboards, and new sit-inside kayak. Any person who hadn't had a chance to test the new products, got the opportunity. Those who tried out the new sit-inside kayak were very impressed with the ease of which the kayak can move in the water. The sleek design really lends itself to speed and ease!

The paddleboards also received two thumbs up. Most people were a little apprehensive to try them at first thinking they would tip easily or be hard to balance and paddle. But, everyone agreed that once we were on them for a few minutes and found our "sea legs", it was easy to get the hang of them and they really are quite stable.

To truly test and compare our different kayak models, we played a game of kayak rugby/football.... Ok, maybe a little bit of everyone's competitive nature that played into that decision too. Jan has explained the basic directions of how to play this game in one of her previous blog posts. As she mentions, it really is a great way to improve your paddling and agility skills.

This kayak rugby challenge was yellow Lifetime Daylite vs. blue Lifetime Calypso, and check it out, it was caught on film by Lifetime President Richard Hendrickson! To put us all on spotlight he used his head camera to capture video from his perspective (as you will see, even though he's president, we don't go too easy on him). I've included just a brief video clip in this post for you to see a glimpse of the fun. We are planning to edit all of video clips together and create an instructional video on our YouTube channel for how to play Kayak Rugby so we can get even more people excited about this fun activity to do with our products!

Long story short…stay tuned because we are going to be rolling out lots of new Lifetime products in the next few months and throughout 2012!

Katie13 May 2011 12:48:00 PMValentine's Day Kayak Winner Announced
Happy Valentine's Day! We hope you're doing something special on this day built for romance. We know how Patrick S. of Hampshire, IL is spending his day…celebrating his lucky win of the Lifetime 10' Manta Kayak built for two (or three) people!

Thanks to everyone who entered and made this our most popular giveaway to date! A lot of you were hoping to win your own kayak to continue the activity you've tried before and loved. The rest of you had never kayaked before, but were anxious for the opportunity to pick up a new hobby to share with your significant other.

If you weren't the lucky winner but still want to surprise your Valentine, be sure to check out Lifetime's complete line of kayaks in the Lifetime Store online. Lifetime kayaks are built specifically for beginners with a lightweight and virtually tip-proof design, but they also feature all the amenities experienced kaykers love. And, with youth models, fishing models, sailing models and more, there is a Lifetime kayak to fit everyone's needs.

Enjoy the rest of your Valentine's day and stay tuned for our March giveaway to start in just a few weeks. It's sure to be a slam-dunk! And, as you can see by the photo, our designer Clint even managed to do a flawless handstand on the kayak! (I can't even do a handstand on the flat, unmoving ground so I didn’t even attempt that trick!) Since it was an almost 100 degree day, we soon turned our outing into an all-out tipping war…and it definitely took a lot of effort and every ounce of strength we could muster to actually tip someone over in the Lifetime kayaks.

After we had everyone sufficiently wet from tipping each other, we tested our paddling agility skills and played a game of "kayak football". If you and your friends own several kayaks, this is a super fun game that gives you a great workout and also helps improve your paddling skills. Here are the basic rules… at least the ones we used.

Equipment needed:
Kayaks and paddles
Lifejackets
1 Floating ball (we used a toy plastic kick-ball)
2 "goals" (we used buoys that were marking the beach zone)

How to play:
Divide into even teams.
Teams line-up against each other like in football and try to get the ball to their own end-zone to score.
If you have the ball IN your kayak, you are NOT allowed to paddle.
You must move the ball down the "field" by throwing it to another teammate OR skimming it along the water with your paddle.
10 second rule - you cannot sit with the ball in your kayak for more than 10 seconds or the other team gains possession of the ball.
To score, the ball must touch the goal.
Set a point limit and first team to reach it, wins. (We were going to play to 10 but only made it to 5 before we were all exhausted!)

Pretty easy rules, but if there is an interception - watch out - it turns into a mad frenzy of waves and paddles! So, the next time you're looking for a new adventure with kayaks, try playing some kayak football... and see let us know how it goes.

Jan25 Aug 2010 2:20:00 PMFamily Fun with the Kayaks!
I had a family reunion a couple weeks ago. This is not your typical family reunion with cousins you’ve never met, let alone seen, before. My extended family is very close-knit and (I hope it’s safe to say) we all look forward to the DFR (aka Dixon Family Reunion) every year, truly. My dad and his two siblings take turns planning it each year. This year was my Uncle Brent’s turn, so we went to Pineview Dam near Huntsville, Utah. I have about 20 cousins in the age range of 28-35. They all have spouses and, on average, 4 kids each; so our family is pushing close to 60 people. The kids range from brand new babies to 16 years old.

As you know, Lifetime acquired the kayak company, Dragonfly Innovation, back in February. I bought two of the blue Calypso kayaks and decided I’d take them up to the lake and see what kind of reaction they got. Let’s just say, there wasn’t a moment where someone wasn’t on them. I had to reserve a turn with one so I could try it out myself! Needless to say, they were a hit. The best part about them is they don’t tip very easily, unless you use them like my 16-year old brother and cousin who kept rocking and tipping each other over for the thrill of doing it. These kayaks were invented not only with beginners in mind, but for beginners. Kayaks are a great water sport because they don’t require a boat to pull it, like a tube but you can maneuver yourself, unlike a regular floatation device that just floats on the water.

If you are looking for a fun family sport that’s inexpensive and brings everyone together—kayaking is the way to go!
Tonnie 18 Aug 2010 12:34:00 PMNew Kayaks Are Making a Big Splash
We are pleased to announce the latest addition to the Lifetime Online Store--(drum roll. Splash!) Kayaks! Lifetime Products is now offering the Calypso kayak at an amazing affordable price to fit your active lifestyle and your budget. This 8 ft kayak can accommodate one adult with a spot for one child in the front as well. This is the perfect beginner's kayak because it is designed for stability, not speed. Perfect for paddling around on lakes and ponds.

The Lifetime Calypso kayak is a one-piece construction of high-density polyethylene plastic--smooth contours with no protruding hardware. This is a durable, lightweight water craft that you can just toss into the back of your vehicle and head for the water. You'll especially appreciate all the handy built-in features like multiple footrest positions, ditty trays, a fishing pole holder, mast receiver, paddle cradle, and cut-out side-carry handle as well as a towing handle that can be attached to front or rear of the kayak. Great for fishing, surfing, or sailing. Personally, I can't think of a more enjoyable way to wile away the hours. Give this kayak a try and I think you'll agree.

Like all Lifetime products, this Lifetime Calypso kayak is designed for the way you live; handy innovative features that make it durable, easy to use, and lots of fun. Check out our online catalog at for more exciting kayak models including youth kayaks and the Sport Fisher kayak. We're sure you're going to be just as excited about our new kayaks as we are!

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT: For our faithful blog readers, we will be offering a limited time discount on the products I feature in my articles. It's a great way to complement our other sporting goods lineup, which already includes basketball systems, soccer goals, and a tetherball set. And, the kayaks work well with our plastics manufacturing expertise, since they are a blow-molded product.

Lifetime will manufacture the blow-molded kayaks in its Utah facility, which means the creation of more manufacturing jobs! Plus, with Lifetime manufacturing kayaks, it's good news for consumers, too. Just as Lifetime transformed the basketball industry with the first complete basketball system packaged in one box, we plan to bring innovation to the packaging of bulky kayaks to make them more widely available for easy mass distribution and retail. Right now you can find Dragonfly kayaks nationally at, Dicks Sporting Goods, Sports Authority and Fred Meyer. But, we'll soon have them available in Lifetime's Online Store and other retailers.

As with all products manufactured by Lifetime, the kayaks feature innovative and quality construction at some of the most affordable price points in the industry. Dragonfly kayaks cater to beginners in kayaking and are uniquely designed to prevent tipping. They are available in a variety of sizes and designs, including both youth and adult sizes.

We'll keep you updated on this exciting new product venture as more news splashes our way!

admin05 May 2010 1:06:00 PM
