What Are Those Fancy Bar Codes?

60056-qr.pngBar codes help make life easier from manufacturing all the way through the supply chain, and up to the check-out register. While you're shopping for products, you can look for better deals and more information by scanning traditional UPCs with your phone, an app, and an internet connection. Pretty cool, right?

Something new that you may have seen cropping up on billboards, articles, advertisements, and even product displays and packaging is a new kind of bar code, a 2D barcode.  These new 2D barcodes are also called a QR code which is short for quick response.

UPCs are a 1D (one-dimensional) type of bar code. Traditionally, a laser is used to illuminate a thin stripe across the barcode. A 2D barcode contains multiple lines of information and require multiple lasers to read. Since not many of us carry lasers around in our pockets, there are apps for smartphones that take their place. iPhone users might be interested in an app called Red Laser, and Android users should look for Barcode Scanner by Zxing. Both of these free apps allow you to "scan" multiple formats of bar codes using your phone's camera.

But why the new codes? Unlike UPCs, 2D barcodes can contain text, a phone number, a "business card", a coupon, can ask if you want to send a text message (for contest entries, voting for contestants, and other fun stuff), and can even contain a URL to a web page or video. It's the latter that's really cool.

Imagine you're in a store, comparing products, and you just can't make a decision. One product has a 2D bar code, the other does not. You pull out your phone, scan the 2D code, and within seconds you're watching an informational video about the product, or maybe even a how-to-assemble video. Making that decision is now a lot easier, and a lot cooler.

At Lifetime, we’re starting to put 2D codes on some of our packaging and store signage on several of our products like our sheds and storage boxes. If you scan the codes while you’re in the store, you can watch how-to video instructions to see how easy it is to assemble products.  Go ahead and give it a try with the code in this blog and see what you find!  Yep, it even works when you scan it on a computer monitor.  And, keep your eyes peeled because you'll start to notice these codes everywhere now that you know what they are!

He is a member of various community, church, and civic organizations, and is actively involved with local, state, and national government. National Night Out
Last night was a fun night in our neighborhood. We celebrated National Night Out. Apparently, most of the country celebrates this event in August. But, because of the summer heat, Texas officially moved its National Night Out to October 7. Plus, we all know, Texas just has to be different! :) The night is a national crime/drug prevention event designed to heighten community awareness and strengthen community spirit. San Antonio and outlying towns hosted various festivals and events last night. And, some individual subdivisions also hosted activities. Our subdivision celebrated by hosting a block party fully sponsored by our Homeowners Association. It was great we just RSVPd and showed up for a yummy dinner and chance to mingle with our neighbors! A free night out of the kitchenwhoo-hoo! Our subdivision is made up of only 64...
Spring Break in Port Aransas
Deep breath. Looong slow exhale. Ok, I think Im mentally ready to unwind from my spring break vacation and start writing. As much as my parents deny it, theyre becoming Ohio snowbirds. For the past two years theyve packed their mini van full and moved to Texas for the month of March. They rent a condo right on the beach in Port Aransas on Mustang Island. I am very blessed that they choose to come to Texas rather than Florida so they can spend quality time with me. Ok, who am I kidding, we all know its for the quality time with my kids, not me! :) So, last week we headed to Port Aransas for spring break week to visit my parents. Spring break at Port Aransas is well, different. I did the whole spring break trip to South Padre Island back in my college days. It was pretty much what you see when watching MTVs Spring Break showh...
Bouncy Good Time!
Last year was a great year for me. I got married in September, and am loving this new adventure! Our wedding day turned out just the way we wanted. It was perfect. Although my wedding day was the best day of my life, we ended up having a pretty great time the night before as well. My husband and I are both pretty laid-back, casual people. So the night before, instead of having a formal dinner or a fancy rehearsal party or reception, we ended up just having a big bash with family and friends at my parents house. I dont think many people can say that they had a huge bouncy slide, snow cone machine, and childrens bouncy castle at their wedding party! But we did, and it was a blast! Although people ended up with sore muscles, plastic burns, and scuffed knees, everyone sure had a great time and I wouldn't have changed it for anyth...
