What Are Those Fancy Bar Codes?

60056-qr.pngBar codes help make life easier from manufacturing all the way through the supply chain, and up to the check-out register. While you're shopping for products, you can look for better deals and more information by scanning traditional UPCs with your phone, an app, and an internet connection. Pretty cool, right?

Something new that you may have seen cropping up on billboards, articles, advertisements, and even product displays and packaging is a new kind of bar code, a 2D barcode.  These new 2D barcodes are also called a QR code which is short for quick response.

UPCs are a 1D (one-dimensional) type of bar code. Traditionally, a laser is used to illuminate a thin stripe across the barcode. A 2D barcode contains multiple lines of information and require multiple lasers to read. Since not many of us carry lasers around in our pockets, there are apps for smartphones that take their place. iPhone users might be interested in an app called Red Laser, and Android users should look for Barcode Scanner by Zxing. Both of these free apps allow you to "scan" multiple formats of bar codes using your phone's camera.

But why the new codes? Unlike UPCs, 2D barcodes can contain text, a phone number, a "business card", a coupon, can ask if you want to send a text message (for contest entries, voting for contestants, and other fun stuff), and can even contain a URL to a web page or video. It's the latter that's really cool.

Imagine you're in a store, comparing products, and you just can't make a decision. One product has a 2D bar code, the other does not. You pull out your phone, scan the 2D code, and within seconds you're watching an informational video about the product, or maybe even a how-to-assemble video. Making that decision is now a lot easier, and a lot cooler.

At Lifetime, we’re starting to put 2D codes on some of our packaging and store signage on several of our products like our sheds and storage boxes. If you scan the codes while you’re in the store, you can watch how-to video instructions to see how easy it is to assemble products.  Go ahead and give it a try with the code in this blog and see what you find!  Yep, it even works when you scan it on a computer monitor.  And, keep your eyes peeled because you'll start to notice these codes everywhere now that you know what they are!

Tailgating Party Video Tips
In case you've been living under a rock and haven't noticed, it's officiallyfootball season again! Know how I know? My husband is glued to the TV every weekend and Monday night! And, he's constantly checking his fantasy football league scores online. Sigh. Personally, I just don't understand the fantasy football fascniation/obsession! Anyway, the start of football season also means the start of tailgating season! It may still be called a tailgate party, but nowadays, most people use more than just a tailgate when it comes to pre-game or pre-race festivities! In fact, quite often, RVs and buffet tables with canopies have replaced simple tailgates. Likewise, a rack of ribs or skewer of shrimp has replaced the traditional game day hotdog or burger. And, surprisingly, a lot of people never even plan on going to the actual game! ...
Which Lifetime Chair Is Right for You?
Lifetime Products is a leading manufacturer in high-density polyethylenefolding chairs. Keep on the look out andI'm sure you'll notice them everywhere from industrial break rooms to professional waiting rooms. Why? Because they are durable and require very little maintenance to look as good as new throughout many years of constant public use, indoors or out. That's especially important for professional environments, but for me personally, I love Lifetime chairs because THEY'RE COMFORTABLE. If you spend alot of time sitting at a desk suffering from back pains (like I did) you may want to start thinking less about cushioning and more about firm support. I found my cushioned office chair was causing me to slump into the back of the chair with my shoulders rolled forward and absolutely no support against my lower back. My aching...
Angled or Straight Basketball Poles?
On occasion, I have been asked whether I prefer a straight or an angled pole when selecting a portable basketball system. At first glance, an angled pole may appear to have performance or safety advantages, but when looked at from an engineers perspective, some deeper insights can be gained. I sat down with one of Lifetimes head engineers to discuss why Lifetime chooses to use straight basketball poles on our systems. Ed has been an engineer at Lifetime Products since 1993 and has played a large role in developing our basketball systems over the years. Here are some of his insights on angled vs. straight basketball systems. Are basketball systems with an angled pole less likely to tip over than ones with a vertical pole? The stability of a portable system has to do with the weight of the backboard and the weight of the ba...
