Scarecrows in Our Halls

Scarecrows by Karly and WestonIf you were walking down the halls of Lifetime's world-headquarters in Clearfield, you would notice something a little out of the ordinary-- Scarecrows lining the walls in many of our buildings. Not your average scarecrows... some have one eye, and others are missing important scarecrow features (other than being more cute than scary). There's a story behind them, and what they represent to those who walk down these halls frequently.

After nearly 25 years in Northern Utah, Lifetime Products enjoys longstanding relationships with the local community, and participates in a variety of local events and causes. Just down the street from Lifetime's Clearfield facility and our world-wide headquarters, is the South Clearfield Elementary School. Lifetime has partnered with the school on various programs, and they even proudly display a banner in front of their school that reads "Lifetime Products Partners in Education".

A few weeks ago, supervisors and Human Resources people at Lifetime gathered pencil boxes and backpacks to deliver to the school. The supervisors were being trained in Lean manufacturing, learning techniques and applying them to a hands-on demonstration where they assembled pencil boxes with various school supplies inside. A total of about 300 pencil boxes were assembled between three training sessions. At the same time, Human Resources ordered some backpacks for emergency and crisis planning, and had a surplus. The result was a donation of pencil boxes and backpacks for the school, and much needed help for under-privileged students. Their principal and front desk staff has been using the items for students whose families could not afford school supplies. Since my last visit they reported that the supplies were given out very fast, and were nearly gone. They said that the students and parents really appreciated the supplies, and that they were excited to be able to hand them to these students.Scarecrows by Orion and Aubriel

In return for this donation, students from a young class gave Lifetime some artwork to display-- little scarecrows that now line our halls. Many people at Lifetime live close to the facility and have children who attend the school. So to us, when these little scarecrows look at us with crooked eyes and scribbles on their overalls, it means we can work another day knowing we've made a small difference, even as small as a set of pencils to draw a smile.

Our Chinese New Year Celebration
Occasionally our family likes to take a time out from our usual dinner routine and enjoy something unique from a culture different than ours. Last week, since Chinese New Year was in full swing, we thought it would be a great opportunity to enjoy a part of the rich Chinese culture. Oftentimes we celebrate with extended family or a couple of families in our neighborhood but this year we decided to try something a little more trouble-free and just celebrated with our little family. We started by bringing one of our Lifetime 6 foot folding banquet tables up from the basement and placing it (with the legs unfolded) on a couple of short storage bins. This allowed the table to sit about 18 inches from the ground. Although sitting on the floor isnt necessarily a dining practice in the Chinese culture, some close friends started doing...
Lifetime Products Profit Sharing
On Feb 6, 2010Lifetime Products held its 42nd bi-annual Profit Sharing Meeting. If youre like me, and dont know what profit sharing is when you first hear of it, let me explain.Profit Sharing is a program where a company shares a portion of the years profit with its employees. At Lifetime, everyone is involved with Profit Sharing and we all get the exact same amount (with the exception of people that have been with the company for less than a year or have not met performance requirements). Lifetimes Profit Sharing meeting is also a report on the company. Both the Lifetime Products President Richard Hendrickson and Owner/CEO take the opportunity to update us on company initiatives, company goals and values, and new products. In this meeting we learned that Lifetime is still completely debt-free, and doing great after recent ...
Will Luck O' the Irish Help You Win A Lifetime Raised Garden Bed?
This giveaway has ended. Tomorrow is St. Patrick's Day. And, as you know, tradition is to wear green. But, rather than wear green, we thought it would be more fun to give something green instead. Our Facebook fans had some really great green guesses yesterdayincluding some we didn't even think of! Money, green kayaks, and Earthtone playsets were all great guesses. However, we were thinking something along the less traditional green lines like a Lifetime Raised Garden Bed! Ok, so maybe it's not actually green in color. (Although there is a little green on the cover. Does that count?)But, you can fill a Lifetime Raised Garden Bed with lots of beautiful green vegetables and it can help you live a more "green" lifestyle. Ok, ok, kind of a stretch, we admit. But are you complaining? It's still a free giveaway! And, after all, th...
