Backboard Materials

Backboard Materials

Backboard Materials

There are many different types of backboard materials to choose from. Sometimes all of the options can be a bit overwhelming. Here is a quick run-down of the different backboards available when you purchase a basketball system from Lifetime Products. Keep in mind, all graphics on Lifetime’s backboards are screen-printed with UV-protected inks for superior color and protection against fading, peeling, or scratching.

Impact Backboard

The Impact Backboard is molded of high-density polyethylene (HDPE), making it virtually unbreakable. Many of Lifetime’s beginner portable systems will have an Impact Backboard. Impact backboards are perfect for someone just starting out and needing a beginners basketball system.

Acrylic Fusion

The Acrylic Fusion Backboard integrates an acrylic playing surface with an unbreakable polyethylene frame for a durable, pro-glass look. The Acrylic Fusion board is a usually on beginner/intermediate basketball systems.

Shatter-Proof Fusion

Shatter-Proof backboards are made with Makrolon polycarbonate, making them virtually unbreakable and many times stronger than acrylic. The superior impact strength of Makrolon polycarbonate provides enough protection to withstand tough abuse and gives the backboard a durable, pro-glass look. Most intermediate/Advanced portable and in-ground basketball systems will have a Shatter-Proof Fusion Backboard.

Steel-Framed Tempered Glass

The steel-framed Tempered Glass backboard is the ultimate professional-play backboard material. Tempered glass is the premium playing surface and gives you the look and play of the professional game. The sturdy steel Y-extension arms provide superior rebound and play, and the heavy-duty steel frame gives added rigidity to the backboard. Most high-end, advanced in-ground basketball systems will have a Tempered Glass Backboard.

Although these are the basic materials used for the backboards on Lifetime basketball systems, there are still many options to choose from. Some backboards come with a weather-resistant steel frame or a frame pad that adds rigidity to the backboard and improves rebound. We bought the 48" Acrylic backboard. There is now a basketball sized hole in the center. I had to kill the one Son (exaggerating), but on his death bed he swore he only was throwing tennis balls at the center mark. It had been very cold that night, but not below freezing. What do I do now. Do I need to pay for a new backboard? Is "lifetime" just the name of the company? Did we in effect use up our lifetime because I "killed him"? Help!

We are very sorry to hear that....though happy to hear that your son is still alive and well :). As for the backboard, I suggest calling our customer care number (1-800-225-3865) and ask for warranty and claims. It really depends on what kind of basketball hoop you have, how long you have had it, etc. to see if you are covered by the warranty. However, even if you are technically not covered, our customer service department is usually very helpful and will try to work something out for you. Hope that helps.

I purchased my son a "Lifetime" portable basketball system.  We had a thunderstorm last night and I woke to see half the acrylic backboard laying around 15 feet from the unit.  (Model # FS16400?  manufactured 10/12/2004)  a short lifetime considering no damage was visible two days ago when we were playing PIG.  How long is the warranty on it.  We registered it as it had a defect when purchased and you sent a new rim with the right number of hooks after Christmas in 2005... please let us know.  email above

The handle that adjusts the height of the backboard has a small pin that sits in a groove. When you push the two handles together this pin pushes something in the piston that raises and lowers the backboard. This pin has broken in the handle and the backboard can no longer be raised and lowered. How do I get replacement parts for the backboard? I can't find them anywhere. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

For these last two comments - I highly recommend calling our customer care number (1-800-225-3865) and ask for warranty and claims. They should be able to help you get replacement parts and determine if you are covered by a warranty. Even if you are not technically covered under warranty, they will try to help you in any way possible and can usually work something out.

I have a similar story about a shattered back board. The boys were playing when it was about 20 degrees outside. A basketball size whole is in the center of the backboard. How do I replace this? Thank you Mark

Our backboard (Part # CB14001-1)has a basketball size hole in it from normal play. However, it was cold outside which might have had a part in it breaking. I would like to replace it. Are parts/prices available online or do I need to go through the customer service department (warranty/claims) to get the price and part ordered? Thank you.

We do have a few backbaords that are sold online in combo sets that include the backboard and rim only, and can be used as a replacement backboard. However, to make sure you get the correct one, I would still recommend calling customer care. They will be able to make sure you get the backboard that will work best for your system and will have a full section. Customer care number (1-800-225-3865).

My name is Robert Coble, and I'm here about my concern on my basketball goal. The right backboard bracket doesn't connect to the backboard. Also if I play on my basketball goal, sometimes the screw that connects to the outside part of the pole brace pops out, therefor that has caused my rim to bend, because my basketball goal falls down. I've only had my goal for a year and a half. If their is anyway that you can contact me ASAP that would be wonderful. Thanks!

The best way to get these problems addressed would be to contact Lifetime's customer care at (1-800-225-3865). They can help answer any questions and see if your system is still covered by warranty.

My son was throwing a "pinkie" ball at the backboard last week-end and HE broke the backboard, too. It is shattered. I would say the weather was "not too cold; lower 40's, maybe." I am here on the website looking for a replacement. I will call the customer care number Monday. After reading Mr. Dan Young's comments above, I was inspired to write in, too ... so you can add my family to your list of people who have had the backboard break/shatter.

Wow. Are you experiencing some kind of problem with your backboards after being in the field for a while. I came on the website to order a replacement backboard because my son (12 year old) and his friends were playing the other day and the backboard shattered while taking a shot. It was the inside square above the rim. It almost came out entirely. I will also call customer care in am. Just surprised at the number of coincidences(?) with a similar experience

We purchased a lifetime hoop (CB01400-I)in 2003. The Backboard lasted a few years and it cracked and broke off in pieces bits at a time. We have been without a backboard for the past 5 years. I should have researched for a replacement backboard when it happened but figured the kids could get along without one. This past winter( 2010-2011) the two metal rods holding the entire hoop up bent and look as though they have rusted away. They also broke off of the plastic base. I am writing to see if this is covered by warranty? Does this warranty cover the whole entire system, meaning I would get an entire new basketball hoop system? Please let me know. Thanks- Heather Berry Cherryfield, Maine

Heather - It really depends on your system and how long you have had it. I would say it is definitely worth a call to our customer care department at (801) 776-8993 (Direct) or (800) 225-3865 (Toll-Free). They will be able to answer any questions and can point you in the right direction for getting a new system.

Add me to the list of purchasers of a CB01400-1 portable system that has seen the target square shatter and fall out. Every response from the company (Shalane) has been to call the number, which is only available until 5 pm. Why can't I find out any real information on line through this thread, like: is there a warranty/recall/replacement on this product? I can't call from work during the hours the number is available.... Thank you

Yes, I agree....I do sound like a broken record. :)  But, contacting our Customer Care Department really is the best way to get your backboard fixed or replaced.  They handle all warranty claims or replacements and will be able to provide you with the most accurate information available.  If you are unable to call during our business hours, you can also contact them via email at customercare@lifetime.com and they can email you at your convenience.  Our basketball systems are backed by a 5-year warranty against defective parts, and you can find the information that you will need to share with Customer Care at http://www.lifetime.com/customer-care/warranty.aspx.  (Be sure to include the outlined information in your email to them so they can process your request in as few as emails as possible if you are unable to talk on the phone). We apologize for the experience you are having with our system, but we do appreciate you bringing it to our attention so we can address it with our research and development department.

We purchased a Model 1533 basketball system three years ago, and the backboard recently broke while my sons were shooting normally. Does the warranty cover this breakage? If not, how do I order a new backboard, possibly a shatterproof one that will fit the 1533 system? Thank you.

Most basketball warranties are 5 years. However, I can't guarantee it unless you fill out a warranty claim and contact our customer service department (800-225-3865). They can assist you with filing a claim or purchasing a replacement.

We have also had the target square shatter and fall out. We have a 2 year old 1533 model. I just wanted to add our problem to the list, as this appears to be a design problem, so the more feedback you get the better. We'll be contacting customer service to see what we can do.

I need to order a replacement part for my grandsons portable basketball goal. The blue lever that holds the goal in place when you move it up or down will not hold anymore. It looks like the tip is worn out on it. We purchased it in December 2012 but never got a chance to register it because apparently the form was in the box and it got thrown away.

We have a 50" (49.5"W actual measurement)portable that is a few years old. Not sure when we bought it. The pole at the base rusted right through and the goal and pole, while ripping the support rod screws out of the base, fell right over. Where can we find a replacement pole? Thanks!

Weigh Anchor and Hoist the Mizzen!
Ahoy There, Me Hearties! If you like to navigate shrewdly, fight recklessly and pillage mercilessly. I have the perfect board game for you. One of the many uses we get out of our Lifetime Card Table and our Lifetime Folding Chairs is using them for a convenient gaming table. The card table is handy for board games where access to the board is necessary. It’s small enough that you do not have to stretch across the table to draw a card or move a token. This also allows us to use the dining table for the dining portion of the evening and the game can be already set-up ready to go instead of waiting to clear and clean the dining table. The dining table can also be reserved to host a large array of desserts and treats. One of our favorite board games is called “Pirates Cove”. Your objective in Pirates Cove is to battle for the ...
Happy (Early) Father's Day to Our Shed Giveaway Winner!
Thanks to everyone who entered this month's giveaway to try and win the Lifetime 7'x7'Shed for their Dad for Father's Day. We received some very touching stories about how much your Dads mean to you and why you wanted to win this shed for Dad. But, in the end, the winner picked by random.org was Sonya R. of Knoxville, TX. Congrats, Sonya. We hope your husband enjoys this year's Father's Day present for years to come! We also heard some great feedback about which features you liked best about this relatively-new Lifetime 7'x7' Shed. By far (and not surprisingly), the feature most of you liked the best was the full-length roof skylight. That's a pretty awesome addition to a shed! Other popular answers were the shatterproof windows that open and the customizable shelving. If you fell in love with this shed but weren't the luck...
