Celebrating Earth Day

Earth Day is one of those things I learned about in elementary school. I remember running home to tell my mom that each drop of water we waste actually becomes a gallon of wasted water for the earth! Like my mom reacted at the time, I now don't think that's true. My first grade brain must have exaggerated the concept. For this year's Earth Day, I decided to volunteer at the local nature center's event, helping with a craft table for children making magazine bead necklaces. Lots of fun! Volunteers before me had made thousands of beads and even sorted them by color. Looking around, I spotted a couple Lifetime tables. I asked one of the vendors a little about her booth then let her know I work for the company who made her table. She immediatley beamed "I love this table!" and went on to say that she bought it for a certain purpouse but uses it for everything. Needless to say, my heart swelled a little with pride.

At Lifetime, I like to say that we're a little greener than you think. I know almost all of our engineers personally, and know that they work hard to create products that are built to last and won't end up in landfills. Lifetime's High Density Plastic (HDPE) products are also 100% recycleable. At Lifetime, we also re-grind the excess plastic and defunct plastic parts, and use the regrind in other plastic products. Many of our black plastic products, including the Lifetime wheelbarrow tub are made from 100% recycled material. Most recently, Lifetime always recycles the steel we use, and we have recently been trying various ways to recycle cardboard used in our factory too. Lifetime also has a strict policy to never let liquid from machines out of the facility, where they seep into the drainage system.

Earth Day is all about appreciating the natural resources we have and finding ways to protect them. It's a good remider for us all, companies and families, to try a few small things every day that might make a big difference.

Backyards Inc. Changes Name to Lifetime Store
Things are starting to look a little different along the Wasatch Front in Utah, and I'm not just talking about the fresh layers of snow on the mountains. We are excited to tell you that Backyards Inc., the Lifetime factory retail store, is changing its name to "Lifetime Store". Start watching for the name change to take place over the course of the next four months with updates to all outdoor signage to be completed by February 2011. For those of you who don't live in Utah, you'll see a change, too. Our online store will soon share the Lifetime Store name to give customers a simpler shopping experience. So why did we make this change? Most importantly, for you - our customers! Even though Backyards Inc. has always been owned by Lifetime, there was no easy way for our customers to instantly recognize Backyards Inc. as Lifeti...

Compost your clippings! Garbage Stinks. Compost Doesn’t.
I had the very unpleasant experience recently of dumping excess lawn clippings directly into my garbage can. The can set out in the sun for a few days before I brought it into the garage. A few days later, WHOA! The can smelled like a skunk had stepped in dog doo-doo, rolled around in raw sewage, and then died in there. I was reminded once again, that lawn clippings should not go directly into the garbage can! I have a composter and do a fair amount of composting. To which, I add lawn clippings when I have brown material to balance it out. The ratio is 1 part green: 20 parts brown. I am often asked by people who dont compost if the compost stinks. The answer is no. That sounds strange because of the waste product that goes into making good compost, but its true. If the proportions of green and b...
