Lawn and Garden

I had the very unpleasant experience recently of dumping excess lawn clippings directly into my garbage can. The can set out in the sun for a few days before I brought it into the garage. A few days later, WHOA! The can smelled like a skunk had stepped in dog doo-doo, rolled around in raw sewage, and then died in there. I was reminded once again, that lawn clippings should not go directly into the garbage can! I have a composter and do a fair amount of composting. To which, I add lawn clippings when I have brown material to balance it out. The ratio is 1 part green: 20 parts brown.  I am often asked by people who don’t compost if the compost stinks. The answer is no. That sounds strange because of the waste product that goes into making good compost, but it’s true. If the proportions of green and brown mater... More

The Fourth of July holiday will shortly be upon us; the holiday that seems to be the official launch of summer, sunburns, and water fights. With all the fun comes parades, BBQs, family reunions—the things we look forward to all year long. Whatever the event, you’re going to need seating and Lifetime has what you need. One of my favorites is the Lifetime 6-Foot Picnic Table. This sturdy table has been on my patio for years. Although it’s foldable for storage, I rarely put it away during the winter and it still looks great. The kids use it for projects, birthday parties, and general mess making (as you know how kids are). But with a quick wipe-down or spray from the hose it looks good enough to use at the family or neighborhood BBQ celebration. Now’s the time to pull out the grill, cook up some great ... More

Bill Cosby had it right. Yes, many of us dads are the “fun ones,” the “jokesters,” and the “dress up dolls.” There are fathers all over the world “who get things they can’t use and . . . don’t want.” With Father’s Day coming up I wanted to offer some suggestions for things that Dad actually wants: Want – Deck Box. Give dad a Lifetime Deck Box so he has somewhere to quickly put away all of the kid’s toys left on the lawn. Keep them safe so he doesn't hit them with the lawn mower anymore. So, really . . . it’s a gift that keeps giving.  Don’t Want – Another light-up, pink, paisley, or superhero tie. It’s just another burp rag for the baby to spit up on. Want – New shed to store all the yard tools in. You know ... More

Gone are the days of having to load up my wheelbarrow or other container with tools from the shed, only to arrive at the spot in my yard I am working on and not have what I need. You know how it is—you end up spending half of your time in the yard going back and forth to the shed to get what you forgot the first time. That is, providing you can find it in the shed. Because if you’re like me, you haven’t organized your tools very well, either. I used to go back and forth, getting the stuff I needed before I was able to get to work. And when I was working I would inevitably set down one tool somewhere to use another, and then forget where I put the first tool. On one occasion, not exaggerating here, I was working with a rake. Two different times after I had laid the rake down, I stepped on it and had it swing... More

At dinner with some friends this weekend we got talking about my job at Lifetime. One of my friends said, “Lifetime makes a lot of cool stuff.” There is a reason I have started my seventh year here at the company… because I agree.  We do make a lot of cool stuff. Working in the Lawn & Garden category these past six years, I have seen a lot of new products. But the core of the category has always been our sheds. In fact, it was an idea to create a shed that launched the category, and thus, my job! One of the neatest innovations in our family of sheds, in my opinion, has been our 10x8 and 15x8 line. These sheds have proven to be very popular. One of the great things about them is the way they allow you to organize your stuff. With the entry on the long side, you can compartmentalize between right a... More

For most people, when they think about kayaking, they think of a day trip to the local lake.  Maybe a vacation day spent floating on the ocean, watching the birds and listening to the calm ocean ripples.  While these trips are great, with just a bit more effort, you can really turn a kayaking trip into a fun filled outdoor adventure. What better way to bond with your family or a group of friends then to be outside, away from all the electronic distractions, kayaking and camping in the wilderness.  There are several ways to enjoy a camping and kayak trip.  Some rivers flow through campgrounds, parks or national forest land allow camping right along the banks of the rivers.   This type of trip can be great for a weekend get-a-way.  Day one is spent paddling a few miles to ... So the first few weeks of Spring are fun to work in the yard…then, reality hits, and I remember how yard work can be a lot of hard work! One of my favorite products we sell is our Adirondack chair. This chair is perfect for chillin’ after pulling weeds and planting flowers. Made from Polystyrene – a big word for a type of plastic that is made to look and feel like wood – this chair is great looking! It is low to the ground and has a slight recline so it’s nice and comfortable. The wood-like material is stain resistant, and holds up well in the sun. It looks like wooden furniture, but you won’t have to stain it every year. You can find our Adirondack chairs at your local Costco. A word of caution…when you tell your spouse you’ll be out weeding, don’t let her find you s... More

Today, here in Utah, it’s warm and sunny. Buds on my flowers and trees are starting to emerge. Snow is harder and harder to find. Dare we hope that Spring has arrived? I love being outside, and look forward to preparing the yard for summertime. Part of that preparation for me this year is getting a new table for the deck. Our previous table was given to us and we learned the hard way that it isn’t snow and water friendly.  Basically the table top is sitting in a heap of rubble on the deck.  My wife and I like to hide from the kids and have breakfast outside. So I think this year I am going to get the Lifetime Bistro Set. If you haven’t seen this yet, it’s pretty nice. Made from Polystyrene, which is a type of plastic that looks like wood, this table is definitely snow and water friendly. It... More

New Patio Furniture on BuyLifetime!
My best friend recently replaced all her wicker patio furniture with Lifetime patio furnitureher wicker chairs and table had rotted from sun exposure in less than two years! As she said, I like the wicker look, but Im not made out of money. These tables and chairs will last forever. Maybe they wont last forever, but they should last a good deal longer, and I agree with her that they look a lot better. Her wicker furniture was faded and ratty in the first summer, even before it fell apart. The clean, smooth finish on her new Lifetime patio furniture will last much longer. I know, because Ive been using Lifetime tables and chairs as patio furniture for ages. Long before I came to work for Lifetime, we had a Lifetime picnic table on our deck and Lifetime folding chairs sitting in the shade under our walnut tree. Apparently, Im...
