Spring is in the air―at least here in Utah. The neighborhood is slowly coming back to life as kids and their parents are reemerging from their indoor hibernation. Time to find the bicycle pump and rollerblade knee pads because, at last, the kids can go outside and play! With the comeback of Spring also comes a greater need for drivers to be aware of the little ones out and about. To this end, Lifetime is introducing a new product this season, the Child Alert sign. This unique sign is shaped like a small child chasing after a soccer ball. “Chucky,” as we affectionately refer to him, is bright construction orange and carries a sign that says “slow.” His base is made similar to the portable bases that Lifetime made famous with our basketball systems, and can be filled with water or sand for even more st... These days, taking a family on a vacation is no easy feat.  Not financially and not logistically.  It requires money, planning, and time!  But it is totally worth it!  Times are changing and so are vacation options.  You don’t need to go to Disney Land to have a great family experience.  Why not plan a vacation around kayaking? Almost anywhere there is water, there is someone who rents kayaks.  But, if you have your own, that is great!  There are so many great paddling destinations in the United States it would take forever to list them all.  The best part about a kayaking vacation is that you often get to experience a new place or situation that so many others don’t get to!  Kayaking out to a secret cove, or down a calm moving river in a desolate canyon are all g... Memorial Day has past and summer’s had its unofficial start!  As the weather heats up and the kids finish up the school year, we are all in need of a vacation.  These days, taking that one big trip to Orlando or hopping on a  cruise to the islands can put a big hurting on the old wallet.   Many people are choosing smaller and more frequent vacations.  And lets be honest, who doesn’t want more vacations?  I know I do.  Here at Lifetime, we wonder, why can’t every weekend be a vacation?  Oh, but it can!! Having a few kayaks laying around for the family can make it easy, affordable and fun to stay closer to home this summer.  You can head to your local lake one weekend and the next weekend do a river float.  The options are endless!  You won’t b... As a kid, my summers were always lazy and unstructured. My sisters and I were always sent outside in the morning, and the day was spent trying to find activities to do.  My point is, summer is here and it's the perfect time to purchase some Lifetime playground equipment. One of my kids’ favorite games to play on our playset at home is “Fish Out of Water.” I sit with my eyes closed, and if I think one of my kids are off the playset I yell, “Fish out of water!” If they get caught, we switch and they have to try and catch me. Kids love to get a break from school during the summer, and we love our Lifetime playset. The best place for imaginative play and exercise is the safety of your own backyard. The great thing about Lifetime is our playsets are made to last. The equipment stands up to the ... More

Last year I wanted to come up with something original for a Mother’s Day gift.   I didn’t want to go with the traditional flowers, birdhouses, or candy.  Showing her how much she means to me and how much I appreciate everything she does is really important.    I racked my brain for days trying to come up with something creative, something different and something that could be enjoyed for more than just one day a year.  What would surprise her? What could I do that she wouldn’t expect?  Then it hit me!  A kayak!!   When Mother’s Day arrived she was never more excited!  Instantly she began listing off all the places she could go and how jealous all her friends would be.  I think the thing she liked the most was that now we could go out kay... For most people, when they think about kayaking, they think of a day trip to the local lake.  Maybe a vacation day spent floating on the ocean, watching the birds and listening to the calm ocean ripples.  While these trips are great, with just a bit more effort, you can really turn a kayaking trip into a fun filled outdoor adventure. What better way to bond with your family or a group of friends then to be outside, away from all the electronic distractions, kayaking and camping in the wilderness.  There are several ways to enjoy a camping and kayak trip.  Some rivers flow through campgrounds, parks or national forest land allow camping right along the banks of the rivers.   This type of trip can be great for a weekend get-a-way.  Day one is spent paddling a few miles to ... This spring, our watersports department has done something we never have before!  We are coming out with a limited edition paddleboard. Sure, this will be the Freestyle XL board we all know and love but there is something that makes it special; its Purple!  Not only is this our first limited edition kayak or paddleboard, it is also our first purple one! In total, there will be 325 Purple Freestyle XL’s out there for the lucky few who can get there hands on one.  I am personally a huge fan of purple, and I think this board looks great.  It has all the great characteristics of our other color boards; stability, buoyancy, padding, bungee straps and two fins. The dark purple color really blends well with the black bungees and confetti white and black foam.  It really pops and looks incredibly styl... More

Our Chinese New Year Celebration
Occasionally our family likes to take a time out from our usual dinner routine and enjoy something unique from a culture different than ours. Last week, since Chinese New Year was in full swing, we thought it would be a great opportunity to enjoy a part of the rich Chinese culture. Oftentimes we celebrate with extended family or a couple of families in our neighborhood but this year we decided to try something a little more trouble-free and just celebrated with our little family. We started by bringing one of our Lifetime 6 foot folding banquet tables up from the basement and placing it (with the legs unfolded) on a couple of short storage bins. This allowed the table to sit about 18 inches from the ground. Although sitting on the floor isnt necessarily a dining practice in the Chinese culture, some close friends started doing...
How to Play Kayak Football
Last week, I had the fun opportunity to tag along with the Lifetime marketing and graphic design teams to test the new Lifetime kayakson Willard Bay, a lake just north of the Lifetime headquarters in Utah. I've kayaked before, but this was my first time trying out the Lifetime kayaks. We were using the Calypso and Daylite models, which are identical 8' molds with the exception of the type of backrest and color. Personally, I preferred the Daylite model because the backrest felt more comfortable to me since it came up a bit higher. And, the feature of being able to store valuables inside the backrest is pretty handy, too. As we've mentioned before, Lifetime kayaks are designed specifically for beginners and are, consequently, extremely stable. In fact, they are so stable that even when the photographer's dog would jump on a ka...
Hosting A Backyard Campout Birthday Party
It's been almost three weeks. Whew. I think my husband and I have finally recovered. I don't know what we were thinking but we somehow let our son talk us into a Backyard Campout Party for his 8th birthday. (Sniff, sniff. I still can't believe my little man is 8 years old already!) It seemed harmless enough, but this was his first group sleepover and "no guests' parents" birthday party so it was a pretty big milestone for him -- and us. After he made his list of neighborhood kids and classmates he wanted to invite, the list totaled 12 kids which sounded manageable. After all, teachers do this all the time with lots more kids, right? The kids were all talking aboutthe party for days beforehand. In addition to the sleepover, the other "big deal" of the party was that they all walked home with my son from school. (Come on think...
