Name: Joe

Position at Lifetime Products: Web Developer. What does that mean? I work with the rest of the web team to put great designs into industry standard HTML5, CSS3, ASP.NET MVC, and use other techno-jargon stuff to help our customers find what they're looking for, learn about our products, and have a fun time doing it.

How long at Lifetime Products: Since November 2005

Background: You’ve always wanted to know who on earth Joe is, and even if you haven't we're going to tell you anyway! He was born in Weber County, Utah, USA. He is a descendant of Paiute (Native American) heritage and is a member of the Kanosh (Utah) Band. He is a member of various community, church, and civic organizations, and is actively involved with local, state, and national government. He is concerned with customer service and is striving to educate businesses concerning proper “consumer etiquette”. Joe is a Thawte Web of Trust Notary and is involved with seamless Digital Signatures utilizing Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) and similar technologies. He is a husband and father. He rides his recumbent bicycle to work every day. He enjoys gardening, houseplants, mobile computing, camping, authoring web sites, working in the yard, and spending time with his family. How does he do it all? We really don’t have the foggiest. Some have suspected he’s discovered the secrets of cold fusion, while others think he may be an android. We may never know for certain.

What is Pinterest? According to their website, Pinterest is a "virtual pinboard" where you can pin your interests. "Pinterest lets you organize and share all the beautiful things you find on the web. People use pinboards to plan their weddings, decorate their homes, and organize their favorite recipes..." Some time ago we started to see Lifetime products showing up on people's pinboards. How cool is that? Based on how fast Pinterest is growing, and all the cool things people are doing with our products, we thought we'd make it easier for you to "Pin" our stuff on your pinboards! Head on over to our Lifetime Store online, find your favorite product, then click the Pin It button to add it to your pinboard!  Happy pinning! More

Back when I was a kid, my Dad asked me to look at some computer specs and "pick the one we wanted". He was a very frugal man and told me to make sure it would "last me though college". That was probably a bit naive, but neither of us knew any better. Today I have a "computer" with a much faster processor, more RAM, more storage space, and a significantly faster Internet connection -- it fits in my pocket and I call it a "smartphone". It really is amazing, the technology that we take for granted. Here at Lifetime Products, we've always used technology to solve problems -- not just because it's "cool" -- though a lot of it is really, really cool! Such is the case with smartphones and tablets! If you have an iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, or Windows Phone 7 we have an app for you! Our apps put our information about all our pro... More

Search engines not only display content, they spider web pages, gathering information from your pages, then re-work all that information into a listing that searchers see when they're looking for stuff -- and the cycle is complete. When a person goes to a search engine they have a good idea of what they’re looking for (otherwise they'll be on StumbleUpon, right?). With millions of search results being found and displayed, sometimes it's hard for people to find what they're looking for among all those results. To help combat that, Google is trying to show searchers more information about their search results. Information about information? That sounds a lot like meta-data! Yes, yes it does! Here at Lifetime, we're starting to roll out web pages that will take advantage of Google's "Rich Snippits" to get mor... More

Contrary to popular opinion, Lifetime doesn't have a magic machine that takes raw-materials in one side, and spits out award winning products on the other side. Instead, we have a talented team of people working in various locations across not only the United States of America, but across the globe, as well. Most of you probably know that Lifetime is the industry leader in residential basketball hoops and polyethylene folding tables and chairs. But, they are also a recognized industry leader in our corporate IT capabilities. In fact, because of our cutting-edge standardization practices, HP recently showcased Lifetime in an international case study to help teach other companies about the benefits of standardization and centralization. Pretty cool. Traditionally, multinational companies have large and unnecessarily redu... More

Bar codes help make life easier from manufacturing all the way through the supply chain, and up to the check-out register. While you're shopping for products, you can look for better deals and more information by scanning traditional UPCs with your phone, an app, and an internet connection. Pretty cool, right? Something new that you may have seen cropping up on billboards, articles, advertisements, and even product displays and packaging is a new kind of bar code, a 2D barcode.  These new 2D barcodes are also called a QR code which is short for quick response. UPCs are a 1D (one-dimensional) type of bar code. Traditionally, a laser is used to illuminate a thin stripe across the barcode. A 2D barcode contains multiple lines of information and require multiple lasers to read. Since not many of us carry lasers around in o... More

At Lifetime, we're always looking for ways to improve our website to make it easier for you to use.  Most recently, we overhauled how customers access our assembly instructions in the Customer Care section of Lifetime.com.  Why is this a big deal?  Well, Lifetime makes a lot of products, and we're continually finding ways to improve upon them to make them easier to assemble, less expensive, and for various other reasons. When these improvements are made, we have to publish a new version of the assembly instructions for that product. On the surface, that's not a big deal because the instructions get printed and packaged inside the box with the rest of the parts. But what happens when a customer loses the instructions? In the past, we've only shown one version of the assembly instructions on our website -- which... More

In most of the United States composting season is almost over -- or is it? Believe it or not, composting season just started! Just started you say? Yes! Okay, what do I mean by that? Well, think about it... the gardening season is winding down in my neck of the woods. All I've got left are cold-weather crops, and some unharvested potatoes, carrots, and red beets. We'll come back to those in a little bit.  All the other plants -- the tomatoes, the potatoes, the herbs -- have wilted with the frost. There's a lot of dead material to compost as you clean out your garden and prepare it for winter. That's why I say it's just the beginning of the composting season -- but there's a catch and a few things to look out for. Composting, as you well know, takes a certain amount of heat. Winter, as you also know, is relati... More

It's Fall Storage Season - Lifetime Has You Covered
As we welcome in the Fall season, we have to farewell theoutdoor entertaining season at least in most parts of the country. For those of you gearing up for cold and snowy winters, it's time to start packing up your outdoor areas including your pool, patio, deck, and yard. In the next few weeks, plan to cover the pool, clean the grill, and put away everything you wont need again until next summer. Unfortunately, all the things that live in your yard and on your patio during the summer suddenly now need a winter home. What to do with so much stuff? Well, first of all, sort through everything and determine if you really need to keep it. Often times outdoor items quickly get tattered, faded, and broken by the end of the summer and it's better to simply trash it. Or, if it's something you don't use anymore or have outgrown, consi...
Fresh Efforts To Go Green!
Just when you think things couldnt possibly get betterthey do! Lifetime is now one of seven businesses actively participating in the Utah Industrial Energy Efficiency Program (UIEEP). The program, which was initiated to help industrial customers increase their efforts in energy efficiency, has already seen massive energy savings. And thats not only great news for Lifetime, but for the members of our community. UIEEPis already taking leaps and bounds to encourage businesses to reduce their energy intensity and emissions, provide training and technical assistance as companies like Lifetime apply energy-saving efforts, and give credit for energy efficiency successes that maximize performance. As those who know us well can testify, Lifetime has been dedicated to the environment and our ability to reduce, reuse, and recyclefrom ...
From Factory to Floor to You
Over the years, weve told you about how our blow-molded products are made, and how our metals are powder-coated to protect them, but how does the whole process work, anyway? I certainly didn't know before I started working for Lifetime. But, here at the Freeport Center, all your products begin from scratch. When I was first hired, I had the chance to tour the entire facility. And it was probably one of the most amazing things Ive ever seen. No kidding. Did you know that in our blow-molding facility, our High Density Polyethylene (HDPE)plastic starts out as beads that are pumped from the trains to the building silos? The beads are melted and poured into the blow-molding forms. When the formed part comes out, Lifetime employees remove excess plastic and prepare them for assembly. In metals, our roll-former slowly rolls and fo...
